We love what we do.

A bit of the History…

In 1993 Idol Hair was founded as Studio 29 by Marc Luickx. He started out in a warehouse in Vyner street, London. It played a transformative role in the growth of the street as a creative art hub and hair salon. Customers would enjoy their hair appointments whilst art and live performances was happening around them. The party came to an end as gentrification descended and Mark’s Studio 29 was forced to relocate due to rising rents and taxes.

He arrived in Victoria Park village, where Queen Victoria once visited in April 1873, and joined a warm and thriving community of independent shops, restaurants and pubs. It was here he set up Idol Hair and furnished the interior with custom-made fixings and furniture. Fast foward 20 years, he has witnessed many of the clientele grow from children to young adults, and the cycle continues.

A bit about now…

We at Idol Hair will always seek for more sustainable and greener hair products, which started with the discovered Davines a few years ago. We started using their hair care range and have since added colour and education, making us one of the main flagship salons in east London. Davines are the most ethical, and green company in the hair industry, and their products are just fantastic!

Our salon is very proud to be 100% recycled, with the help of B Corps and Eco-friendly companies like Full Circle Salon Recycling, Smol, Who gives a crap, Scrummi, and Davines. We make sure our weekly waste is recycled or biodegradable, and sanitise the shop using only cleaning products that are kind to the environment

Our hair salon, safe and designed with you in mind.

In the light of COVID, enforced closure gave Marc time to think about the future of the salon. How do we redesign a limited space with post Covid with post COVID in-mind. A radio interview about the sense of safety created by travelling in first/business class pods, having everything in your space but not isolated from others, set him thinking about individual units - hair pods - if you will. A unit where you walk in, sit down and don’t have to move again, so creating minimal traffic in the salon. Wash basins slide away from reclining chairs to enable plenty of space for cutting, styling and colouring. Chargers, leads and power points are close by should you need to do some work; the space is filled with plants and an air purifying system creates 99% pure air.

While all this innovation has created a fresh, vibrant boutique-salon that feels super-safe and foward-looking, what has not changed is a team full of quirky individuals who work well and hard together and still engage with the comunity and customers in the most humble and inclusive way.

Where possible we offer one-to-one hair appointments and/or consultations.
